Kyokushin is a full-contact style of karate founded in 1964 by Masutatsu Oyama. Its name, which means "the ultimate truth," reflects its philosophy of self-improvement, discipline, and rigorous training.
Unlike many other karate styles, Kyokushin emphasizes realistic, full-contact sparring without protective gloves or pads. This focus on "real fighting" is central to its identity. Practitioners are known for their physical conditioning and mental fortitude.
The training combines traditional elements like kihon (basics) and kata (forms) with intense kumite (sparring). While punches to the head are prohibited in competition, kicks to the head and punches to the body and legs are allowed, making it a demanding and powerful martial art.
Kyokushin classes are known for their physical intensity and focus on developing a strong mind and body. A typical class is highly structured and includes a blend of three core elements, known as the "three K's":
Classes also heavily incorporate conditioning and calisthenics, such as push-ups, sit-ups, and squats, to build the physical resilience needed for full-contact practice. The overall goal is to not only develop fighting skills but also to foster discipline, respect, and mental fortitude.
